The Intriguing Origins of Bollywood’s ‘Murder’ Franchise

In 2004, Mahesh Bhatt introduced audiences to the first installment of the “Murder” franchise, setting the stage for a series that would redefine Bollywood’s thriller genre. Little did viewers know that the film was inspired by the Hollywood movie “Unfaithful,” released in 2000.

Seven years later, in 2011, the franchise returned with its second installment, continuing its legacy of suspense and intrigue. This time, the storyline drew inspiration from the Korean film “The Chaser,” released in 2008, adding a new dimension to the captivating narrative.

In 2013, the “Murder” franchise reached its culmination with the release of its third and final installment. Drawing from the Spanish thriller “The Hidden Face,” released in 2011, the film offered audiences a gripping conclusion to the series, solidifying its status as a Bollywood classic.

While the “Murder” franchise garnered immense success in India, its roots can be traced back to acclaimed foreign films. Each installment seamlessly adapted elements from Hollywood, Korean, and Spanish cinema, showcasing the global influence on Bollywood storytelling.

Despite its origins in foreign cinema, the “Murder” franchise left an indelible mark on Indian audiences, captivating them with its intense plots and riveting performances. The series paved the way for a new wave of thrillers in Bollywood, influencing filmmakers and audiences alike.
